Tea is a popular drink known to boost health and wellness. By itself, green and black teas are linked to numerous health benefits.
So what is microgreens tea? How is it different from regular tea, and why should you consider adding it to your daily health regimen?
What are microgreens?
Microgreens are hailed as superfoods for being very rich in nutrients and flavor. Microgreens are essentially baby vegetables, the 2nd phase in a plants life. Phase 1 is sprouts, which are at 2-4 days old. Phase 2, from 10-14 days is the microgreen stage.
Within this 10-14 day timeframe, the plant peaks out in nutritional content. During this phase, nutrient density can be up to 40 higher than the adult plant’s levels.
The microgreen stage is when the plant has developed its cotyledons, or its first set of “leaves” but before it develops its true leaves.
What makes microgreens different from sprouts?
Aside from the plant’s age, one difference between sprouts and microgreens is the nutritional density. Sprouts are not as nutrient-dense as the plants are in the microgreens stage.
Another difference and far more concerning is that sprouts have to be cultivated in dark and humid conditions. That’s the perfect breeding ground for any bacteria lying around on the seeds’ surface. Microgreens have already broken out of the soil and have been exposed to sunlight so there is less risk of bacteria.
This exposure to the sun also means there is the added benefit of phytonutrients. It also means that microgreens have had the chance to develop more Vitamins A, C, K and folates. Physically, it’s easy to tell which is which because unlike sprouts, microgreens have leaves.
What are the health benefits of microgreen tea?
While there are lots of microgreens available, we chose to pack our teas with broccoli microgreens. We’ve already established that microgreens are at the plant’s peak levels of nutrient value. We know that broccoli is rich in vitamin C, so you can just imagine how high the Vitamin C content is during the microgreen stage.
Vitamin C helps in growth and in repairing damage in our bodies. It also helps boost our immune system. Polyphenols present in microgreens have been shown to have positive effects on heart disease, Alzheimer’s, diabetes and certain types of cancer.
Here at Microtea, each of our blends contain different herbs to produce different effects. Combined with the power of broccoli microgreen tea, these herbs can help improve your overall health in more ways than one.
The Recovery blend, harnesses the antioxidant powers of turmeric blended with broccoli microgreens, along with a few other herbs. It also contains peppercorn which helps increase the bioavailability of turmeric. With the added benefits of microgreens, this tasty tea is a delicious way to improve the body’s general wellness.
The Relax blend has chamomile, which helps the body wind down after a long day. Mixed with broccoli microgreens, along with other herbs, it provides the perfect taste for relaxation while boosting your body’s defense system.
Our Energize blend combines Pu-erh and black tea with broccoli and kale microgreens. It has more caffeine content than the usual tea but with only half of that in coffee. That means you can take it in the morning, at midday and in the evening, without worrying about caffeine overload.
The newest varieties are under the Microtea plus Hump Extract line with the original varieties above enhanced with broad-spectrum organically-grown hemp extract.
